2019 has been a significant year for us here at MSP. We’ve invested in innovation through agri-tech research and development, supported our local community and of course continued to work in partnership with our farming customers in what was a challenging end to the year.
It has no doubt been a demanding year for agriculture with a lot of uncertainty due to weather conditions and significant political upheaval, but, as always, the farming community has rallied to make the best of whatever has been thrown at us. Keep reading to find out what our highlights of 2019 have been.
Investing in the future
At MSP, we remain focused on building foundations for the future success of the company, our customers and our farming partners who we work alongside. This year has seen a major investment in one piece of agri-tech in particular – DroneAG’s crop-scouting software, Skippy Scout.
We were involved with trials of Skippy Scout from the outset with our agronomists seeing increased efficiency by being able to accurately target areas where any agrochemical intervention is needed out in the field. This software offers farmers an affordable, easy to use drone system that saves farmers time and increases the efficiency of their crop scouting. You can read more about our partnership with DroneAG here.
We were also delighted that earlier this year, Ben Gothorp, Technical Officer at MSP, was nominated for the prestigious Barrie Orme Shield, an award given to the top BASIS exam candidate in the UK. Ben’s BASIS qualification in Crop Protection involved a written exam, practical identification, a research project and oral tests, and equipped him with invaluable knowledge and understanding that he has passed on to MSP farming customers.
Investing in staff development is something we prioritise, so it was absolutely brilliant to see Ben’s hard work rewarded by his nomination as result of supporting him through his BASIS certificate.
Supporting our community
Community is a vital part of the work we do at MSP and our parent company, Simpsons Malt. For many years, we have shown our support for Berwick Rugby Club through various means, including an advertising board, match sponsorship and programme adverts, so we were delighted to be drawn as the main kit sponsor for their First XV team for the 2019/20 season.
Berwick Rugby Club are ending their year on a high near the top of their league – having won promotion last year – so we are excited to be partnering with the First XV as we head into the new year as main kit sponsors.
In 2017, we tragically lost good friend, colleague, son, brother, father, and humble maltster, Peter Simpson. At the age of just 43, he was taken far too soon after a battle with pancreatic cancer, and this year a team from MSP and Simpsons Malt took part in RideLondon’s mammoth 100-mile closed road cycle circuit to raise money for the charity Pancreatic Cancer UK in memory of Peter.
Our team, the Humble Maltsters, managed to raise an incredible £36,068 for the charity – a huge congratulations to the team and a massive thank you to all those who donated towards this incredible cause.
Your partners in farming
Our customers are at the heart of what we do at MSP. This summer, we invited more than 20 of our barley growing customers to Macallan’s state-of-the-art distillery to discover how their barley plays a vital role in producing their world-renowned whiskies and thank them for their ongoing partnership.
Macallan has exclusively used malt from Simpsons Malt for the past 21 years, and the guided tour showed our farming customers how their produce was being enjoyed by people across the world in such a high-quality product. Plus, we never turn down the chance for a wee dram!
This summer we also launched our brand-new online customer portal, MyMSP, which gives our customers access to all information relating to their business with us. With everything from your account balance to delivery information able to be accessed in real time, the portal saves farmers valuable time and effort by efficiently storing and displaying their information.
We hope that, over time, MyMSP will become widely utilised by our customers and partners, generally making their lives easier and increasing the efficiency of their business.
2019 has been a great year for the MSP team – we’d like to wish all of our farming customers and partners a happy festive period and a prosperous and productive new year.
