Having gained over 30 years of experience within the agriculture industry, Andy Hindhaugh brings a wealth of knowledge and skills to his role as Commercial Director for the Merchanting Business at MSP.
Andy handles all facets of the Merchanting Business as well as supporting his own farming client base – he’s a busy man! We sat down with Andy for a quick dram to find out a bit more about him, what his role involves and the challenges that are currently facing our farming customers.
What attracted you to a role with MSP?
“It is a strong private company that I thought would let me develop as an individual. And I was right – MSP values employee development and goes to great lengths to support and nurture everyone, throughout every role in the company.”
What is your career background?
“I completed a degree in Agriculture, Food and Marketing at Newcastle University. I then went on to work for HG McCreath (part of Associated British Maltsters) and Dalgety Agriculture before joining MSP in 1996.”
Describe a typical day in your role at MSP
“In my role, I have overall responsibility for all aspects within the Merchanting Business alongside maintaining a farmer and client base of my own. I will speak to colleagues and farmers regarding various issues – staying in contact with farmers is vital as it ensures a mutual understanding and maintenance of our supply chain.”
What is your area of expertise?
“Handling people and devising strategies – communication and planning are absolutely essential in my role to ensure the business flows smoothly.”
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
“Always listen – you don’t know when a minor detail might come in handy that you might otherwise have overlooked.”
What’s best thing about your job at MSP?
“Its diversity – I could be at my desk in the office in the morning before heading out to meet one of our many customers at their farm in the afternoon. No two days are the same!”
And the worst?
“When people come to me with problems without having thought of possible solutions – I really value when people can take the initiative.”
What trends are you seeing emerging in your area?
“I have found that more and more farmers want to understand their markets and the opportunities they have within them – at MSP we are experts in explaining what these are and helping them to take advantage of these opportunities fully.”
What advice would you give to a farmer looking to become a MSP grower?
“I would say they should visit our Berwick site and meet everyone in the team – it will let you get the best understanding of our business and the value it can provide to farmers.”
What is the biggest challenge facing farming today?
“The sense of volatility across everything, from politics and markets to the weather – nobody can predict the challenges that the next year will bring to the agriculture industry.”

“My song would be Days like these by Van Morrison and my drink of choice – a Highland Park 12-Year-Old.”
